Slow start proves costly in CCIW opener

Grubor, Cruz lead Pioneers in 69-56 road loss to Augustana

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Sophomore guard Sierra Grubor (Milwaukee, Wis.) finished with a team-high 16 points, four steals and an assist but it wasn't enough as the Carroll University women's basketball team lost to Augustana College 69-56 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin opener at the Roy J. Carver Center on Saturday evening.
The frustrating road loss snapped a string of back-to-back victories for Carroll, which dropped to 3-4 overall.
Augustana, which improved to 4-3 overall, outscored the Pioneers 38-26 in the first half, including a 20-10 margin in the opening quarter.
The Vikings scored 15 unanswered points over the course of the first eight minutes of the contest. 
Freshman guard Alyssa Cruz (West Allis, Wis.) followed with 15 points, including 7 of 8 free throws, a team-best six steals, four assists and two rebounds for Carroll, which made two baskets from 3-point range, 16 of 30 free throws and shot 30.6 percent from field-goal range. Sophomore guard Emily Majerus (Plymouth, Wis.) contributed six points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Pioneers, who generated 27 points off of turnovers.
Freshman forward Kayla Stefka (Johnsburg, Ill.) chipped in five points while sophomore center Katie Rossetti (Wauconda, Ill.) had four points and a team-high 10 rebounds for Carroll, which was outrebounded 47-36. Sophomore forward Delaney Sjong (Salem, Wis.) and freshman center Celina Schwantes (Pewaukee, Wis.) each added four points.
Junior guard Alexis Jones registered a double-double by finishing with a game-high 18 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot to lead Augustana, which made five 3-pointers, 14 of 22 free throws and shot 47.2 percent from the field.
The Vikings asserted themselves inside throughout the battle, scoring 34 points in the paint.
