Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | By Jeff Hagenau

Pioneers dominate in home opener

Jelacic scores six goals to lead Carroll in home-field debut

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Clara Jelacic had a day to remember.
Jelacic, a freshman midfielder from Waukesha, Wis., contributed a team-high six goals and an assist to lead the Carroll University women's lacrosse team to a 13-1 victory over Cornell College in a cold, blustery nonconference game at Schneider Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
It was the first home-field victory of the season for Carroll, which improved to 2-0 overall.
For Jelacic, one of nine freshmen on the talented roster this season, it was special making her home-field debut.
"It was an exciting experience," said a smiling Jelacic, a graduate of Waukesha West High School who has combined to score nine goals in her first two games. "Looking back on the day, it was one of the best games of my lacrosse career and will always be one of those special memories to enjoy for years to come. Being from the area, I had practiced and played on this field a few times before in high school but it never quite felt like this. It just meant a lot to be able to compete at home for the first time at the next level and contribute to a huge win. I was a little worried at first about how the wind would impact the game but was really happy with the way everyone used their knowledge and adjusted to the situation."
Jelacic, who scored three times in the first half, equaled a program record for goals in a single game.
"Coming off a victory on the road in our first game of the season, we came in with some energy and wanted to make a statement," Jelacic added. "With there being so many newcomers on the team this year, we were motivated to come out fast, play strong and show that everyone is ready to make the most of the opportunity to play at the collegiate level. From beginning to end, we competed hard on every possession, supported one another and had a lot of fun. It was just a special day."
Freshman midfielder Courtenay Karls (Waukesha, Wis.) followed with two goals and two assists for the Pioneers, who scored seven unanswered goals in the first half.
Junior midfielder Ariannah Ritter (Sun Prairie, Wis.) had two goals with senior attacker Betty Koenig (Sun Prairie, Wis.) collecting a goal and two assists for Carroll, which outshot Cornell 31-14 - including a 22-7 shot-on-goal advantage.  Freshman midfielder Michaela Johnson (Mukwonago, Wis.) added two goals in the rout.
Junior goalkeeper Shelby Schoob (Sun Prairie, Wis.) registered six saves in playing the entire 60 minutes for the Pioneers, who converted six free-position shots.
Carroll has combined to outscore its first two opponents 28-10.
"With having back-to-back games to start the season, we knew it was important to start off on the right foot so it was great to end the weekend with two victories," Carroll head coach Michael Hodge said. "We have a lot of new players and faces on the team this year so we're taking a game-by-game approach, continuing to improve each time we step on the field and learning how to win at the collegiate level. Being early in the season, it was nice to be able to show some of our firepower in the home opener.
"Defensively, it was the best performance in program history and should act as a great stepping stone to build off of in the weeks to come. It was just a complete team effort from start to finish."
