Box Score TUCSON, Ariz.- Carroll University (4-1, 0-0 CCIW) topped UW-Superior on Saturday evening by the final of 12-5.
UW-Superior took the early lead in the top of the first inning on a two-run RBI double for the 2-0 advantage.
Carroll answered in the bottom of the first as Jake Langford singled to start the inning, stole second and scored on a RBI single by AJ Johnson to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Yellowjackets picked up a single run in the top of the third to extend their lead to 3-1.
Langford led off the bottom of the 3
rd with a single, would advance to second on a walk to Harmeyer and score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Alex Kermendy to cut the lead to 3-2.
Superior added an unearned run with two outs in the 4
th to push the lead to 4-2.
Carroll would tie the game in the bottom of the 4
th as freshman Ethan Burns would single to lead off the inning and senior Ryan Hetherington would drive a fastball deep over the left center field fence to knot the game at 4-4.
UW-Superior retook the lead in the top of the 5
th on a one out single followed by a run-scoring double to make the score 5-4.
Carroll University took the lead in the bottom of the 6
th. Hunter Frey walked to lead off the inning and would score on an RBI double to center field by Dylan Callahan. Callahan would then score on a Burns single to give the Pios the 6-5 lead.
The Pioneers would extend their lead in the bottom of the 7
th. Langford walked with one out and scored on a hit-and-run RBI double by Harmeyer to extend the lead to 7-5. Hunter Frey would follow with a walk and following a fielder's choice would score on an Alex Kermendy sacrifice fly to push the lead to 8-5.
The Yellowjackets would threaten on the top of the 8
th putting runners on 2
nd and 3
rd with no outs. Logan Johnson would enter in relieve and strike out the first two batters before inducing a ground ball to first base to kill the potential rally.
The Pios would put the game away in the bottom of the 8
th on a Harmeyer RBI single, a Frey sacrifice fly and an AJ Johnson RBI triple to push the lead to 12-5.
Johnson would work a 1-2-3 ninth inning to seal the victory.
Cam Godinsky (1-0) would earn the win on the mound working six innings striking out three. Johnson finished with two perfect innings, striking out 3 to close out the win.
Carroll returns to action on Sunday as they face Allegheny at 10am MST.
