Carroll captures first victory of Florida trip

Pioneers rally for three runs in the bottom of the seventh

CLERMONT, Fla. -  Sophomore first baseman Elaine Anderson (Bristol, Wis.) drove in the winning run on a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh to cap a dramatic three-run rally as the Carroll University softball team defeated Hendrix College 6-5 in a nonconference showdown to begin the second day of the PFX Spring Games at Hancock Park on Sunday afternoon.
It was the first victory of the 13-game Spring Break trip and snapped a string of three straight losses for Carroll, which improved to 1-2 in the tournament and 3-4 overall.
Trailing 5-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Pioneers answered with a decisive three-run rally.
Anderson and junior center fielder Rosie Craine (Wheaton, Ill.) each had two hits and drove in a run to fuel a nine-hit offensive attack for the Pioneers, who scored three times in the second. Junior right fielder Annika Graves (Muskego, Wis.) contributed one hit and three RBIs with junior catcher Veronica Rodriguez (South Bend, Ind.), junior courtesy runner Maggie Erdman (Jefferson, Wis.), sophomore  pinch hitter Ashley McNamara (Batavia, Ill.) and freshman shortstop Emily Green (Oswego, Ill.) each adding a hit.
Sophomore right-hander Amanda Osterhus (Munster, Ind.) was the winning pitcher, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits with eight strikeouts and two walks to earn a complete-game victory.
Osterhus threw 125 pitches in the pressure-packed contest, including 80 strikes.
