Carroll showcases resilience in victory

Pioneers pound out 12 hits en route to third consecutive victory

CLERMONT, Fla. - Junior catcher Veronica Rodriguez (South Bend, Ind.) went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs as the Carroll University softball team defeated the University of Chicago 7-5 in a hard-fought nonconference battle to wrap up its fourth day of the PFX Spring Games at Legends Way Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
It was the third consecutive victory of the tournament for Carroll, which improved to 4-4 on its Spring Break trip and 6-6 overall.
The contest remained scoreless after two innings but the Pioneers answered with two runs in the top of the third - collecting their first run on an RBI single to center field by sophomore left fielder Rosalie Jrolf (Dousman, Wis.), followed by a run-scoring single from Rodriguez.
University of Chicago scored three runs on four hits to claim a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third.
The Pioneers responded with four runs as the result of two hits and an error in what became a momentum-shifting top of the fourth.
Junior right fielder Annika Graves (Muskego, Wis.) ignited the rally with a game-tying RBI single, freshman designated hitter Allyssa Demma (Orland Park, Ill.) drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Rodriguez added a two-run double to left field.
Carroll scored its final run as Demma delivered an RBI single to center field in the sixth.
Graves went 4-for-5 with RBI and scored three times to power Carroll's explosive 12-hit attack.
Sophomore right-hander Amanda Osterhus (Munster, Ind.) was the winning pitcher and improved to 4-2 overall, yielding three earned runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts and no walks to earn a complete-game victory.
