TUCSON, Ariz. – Carroll University (8-2, 0-0) completed their seven day Arizona trip with a pair of 12-2 victories on Wednesday afternoon over Carleton and UW-Superior to finish the trip 6-2.
Game one pitted the Pioneers against Carleton College (5-4, 0-0 MIAC). Senior Carter Howard (Black Earth, Wis.) was making his third start of the season and was dominate on the mound to run his season record to 3-0. Howard worked seven strong innings surrendering just four hits and one run while striking out six.
Howard had plenty of offensive support. Carroll would get on the board in the second inning to take the early 1-0 lead before adding five more in the third to push their advantage to 6-0. A four run 7
th and two more in the eighth would lead to a mercy rule shortened final score of 12-2.
Sophomore Dylan Callahan (Sheboygan, Wis.) would continue his recent hot streak, finishing the game 3x4 with two runs scored, a triple and four RBI to pace the Pioneers.
Game two would be more of the same for the Pios and an explosive offense and dominate pitching would continue to lead the way.
Andrew Stone (Fox Lake, Ill.), a junior lefty, would work six innings surrendering one earned run while scattering four hits and striking out four to run his season record to 2-0.
The offense would again strike early with a single run in the first and two more in the second to take the early 3-0 lead. A single run in the fourth and six more in the fifth would stake the Pios to the 10-1 lead. Carroll would plate a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and hang on for the mercy rule victory over the Yellowjackets, 12-2.
Senior Mitch Carlson (Maple Plain, Minn.) would lead the offensive output finishing 4x5 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
Carroll University would combine for 33 hits in the 15 innings played on Wednesday to raise their team batting average to .364.
Weather permitting, Carroll will hit the road to southern Indiana for a weekend series against Hanover College on Saturday and Sunday this week.
