ROCKFORD, Ill. – Carroll University (9-2, 0-0 CCIW) held on to a late lead to overcome a scrappy Northland College (0-11, 0-0 UMAC) squad by the final of 4-3 on Sunday afternoon.
The Lumberjacks would take the early lead scoring single runs in the top of the third and fourth innings for the early 2-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the fourth the Pioneer offense would break-through. Ryan Hetherington would single with one out to start the rally, Ethan Burns would follow with a walk to put runners at first and second. Following a fly ball out to left, Matt Putman would double with two outs down the left field line to score Hetherington and Burns and knot the game at 2-2.
The Carroll offense would continue to plug away in the bottom of the fifth. A lead off error would allow Sam Harmeyer to reach base, AJ Johnson would be hit by a pitch and Dylan Callahan would single to load the bases with no outs. Alex Kermendy would single to score Harmeyer allowing the Pios to take their first lead of the game 3-2. Following a shallow fly ball out, Burns would draw a walk to force home Johnson to extend the lead to 4-2.
