WAUKESHA, Wis. – Carroll University (9-4, 0-2 CCIW) dropped both ends of their conference opening double-header on Wednesday to Carthage College (13-3, 2-0 CCIW).
Game one was all Carthage from the opening inning. A lead-off walk followed by a two-run homerun would be all that Carthage would need as they cruised to the easy 16-0 win.
Game two would get off to a rough start as three Carroll infield errors would give Carthage an early run, but a double play ball would limit the damage to just the single run and a 1-0 Carthage lead.
Carroll would answer in the bottom of the first as Hunter Frey would walk with two out and score on a double to right-center off the bat of sophomore Dylan Callahan to tie the game at one.
Carthage would plate a run in the top of the third to take the 2-1 lead.
The Pios would re-tie the game in the bottom of the fourth as Ryan Hetherington would lead of the inning with a line-drive single to left and after two balk calls would score from third on a wild pitch to tie the game 2-2.
Three Carthage homeruns in the 7
th and 8
th innings would allow the Red to retake the lead 7-2.
Carroll University would cut into the lead in the bottom of the 8
th as Jake Langford would single to start the inning and eventually score on a Sam Harmeyer ground-out to make it a 7-3 game.
However the Pios would go down quietly in the ninth inning dropping them to 0-2 in the CCIW.
Andrew Stone (3-1) was solid on the mound despite taking the loss. Stone worked six strong innings scattering five hits.
Carroll will look to rebound as they host North Park University in a Good Friday double-header starting at noon.
