KENOSHA, Wis. – Carroll University (13-14, 2-12 CCIW) took a two-run lead into the ninth inning versus nineteenth ranked Carthage College (23-4, 10-1 CCIW) but gave up three to fall 6-5 on the road Thursday afternoon.
The Pioneers got out of the gates well, putting a pair of runs on the board with an RBI ground-out and a two-out RBI double from Zach Meyer to take the 2-0 lead.
Brady Durni would single with one out in the second inning and advance to third on a Jake Langford single. Durni would tag and score on a Matt Putman flyball to center field to give the Pioneers the 3-0 lead.
The Carroll offense would continue to click in the third as Ryan Hetherington would reach on an error with one out and score on a line-drive single to right field off the bat of Mike Rufer to extend the Pio lead to 4-0.
Carthage would get back into the game with a three run fourth inning on a pair of singles and a pair of doubles to cut the Pio lead to 4-3.
The Pioneers would add and insurance run in the top of the eighth inning as Langford would draw a two-out walk, steal second base and score on a Putman hard line drive up the middle off the shortstop's glove making the score 5-3.
The Carthage bats, came alive in the bottom of the ninth as five consecutive hard-hit balls lead to three runs and crushed the upset bid for the Pioneers.
Starter Cam Godinsky (1-3) deserved a better fate as he was solid working six strong innings and surrendering just the three runs.
Freshman Danny Glampe, making his first career start, was a last minute fill in and had a great debut. Glampe finished the day 2x3, with a pair of walks.
Carroll will return to action on Saturday night as they travel to Lee Pfund Stadium in Carol Stream, Illinois to take on Millikin University at 7pm.
