Pios Roll to Seventh Straight Win, Set School Record for Wins in Season

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Carroll University (20-14, 8-12 CCIW) swept a double-header at Frame Park on Saturday over Wheaton college by final scores of 7-4 and 10-2.

With the wins the 2018 Pioneers set the school record for wins in a season.

Game one was a pitching duel for the first three and a half innings until Ryan Hetherington would lead off the bottom of the fourth with a triple off the right field fence and score on a throwing error by the catcher to give the Pios the 1-0 lead.

Carroll would add three more runs in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by a Hetherington opposite field homerun to increase the lead to 4-0.
Hetherington would add his second homerun of the day in the seventh as the Pios added a pair of runs to lead 6-0.

AJ Johnson would send a mammoth shot into the Fox River in the top of the eighth as the lead would grow to 8-0.

Senior Carter Howard (5-2) would be masterful on the mound.  Howard would work five and two-thirds innings scoreless innings, while striking out four to earn the win.

Game two was more of the same as the Pioneer bats stayed hot and the pitching staff was on top of their game.

An error, ground out and wild pitch would allow Jake Langford to score in the first giving Carroll the early 1-0 lead.

Sam Harmeyer would hit an opposite field homerun in the third to push the lead to 2-0 and Mitch Carlson would hit a two-run bomb in the fourth to give the Pios the 4-1 lead.

Johnson would hit his second long ball of the day in the fifth and Harmeyer would drive in a pair with a double in the sixth as the Carroll lead would grow to 10-2.

Junior Cam Godinsky (3-3) would earn the win on the mound, working seven strong innings surrendering two unearned runs, striking out seven and not issuing a walk to earn the victory.

With the pair of wins on Saturday, Pioneer head coach Stein Rear becomes the winningest coach in Carroll University history surpassing Steve Danhoff.

Carroll will return to action with a pair of non-conference games at Wisconsin Lutheran on Monday at 2pm.
