WAUKESHA, Wis. -Â Â
Cassidy Mrotek had a little time to kill.
Mrotek, a 5-foot-7 junior outside hitter from Manitowoc, Wis., contributed a team-high 11 kills and 10 digs as the Carroll University women's volleyball team swept Lawrence University 25-23, 25-15, 25-16 in a nonconference dual to conclude its own triangular at Van Male Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.
It was the eighth consecutive dual-meet victory for Carroll, which celebrated Family Day by recording its fourth sweep of the season to improve to 12-4 overall.Â
Mrotek, one of six juniors on the deep, experienced roster, was a force throughout the day - highlighted by a fierce, hard-lining spike from the left side to put an exclamation point on the character-building first-set victory.
"We all get along, we're connecting well on the court and just having a lot of fun out there," said a smiling Mrotek, who earned all-tournament honors along with junior outside hitter
Sydney Wilkins (Portage, Ind.) at Ripon College's Red Hawk Invitational on Sept. 8. "Last year, we were always a little up and down so it's exciting to be on such a roll right now.
"Everyone is just doing their job, working together and attempting to execute well on every point. It's very satifying to be able to take care of business, finish off matches and avoid going to a fifth set. All of the hard work is paying off and we're beginning to show how good we can be when we play up to our potential. My teammates did a great job of passing and setting the ball so it was nice to be able to step up, take advantage of the opportunities and finish on some important points."
Junior outside hitter
Kylie Mueller (Fox Lake, Ill.) followed with six kills and senior outside hitter
Josie Wierzal (Frankfort, Ill.) had five kills for the Pioneers, who generated 17 kills with a dominant .325 hitting percentage and committed only four errors in the decisive third set.
Senior middle blocker
Karley Wolf (Roselle, Ill.), junior middle blocker
Erika Dunnam (Shawano, Wis.) and sophomore middle blocker
Rachel Noonan (Crystal Lake, Ill.) each had two blocks for Carroll, which finished with 36 kills, six blocks and four aces in the contest.
Senior defensive specialist
Amanda Hahn (Itasca, Ill.) collected two aces and six digs, junior setter
Emma Przeslicke (Evergreen Park, Ill.) had 17 assists with senior defensive specialist
Trystam Carr (Charlottesville, Va.) chipping in nine digs and two aces for the Pioneers. Sophomore outside hitter
Kelsey Schwochert (Montello, Wis.) added 12 assists and an ace.
"We really came in with a different mindset this season and have thrived off of all the positive energy," said Carr, who used an efficient right-handed serve to help the Pioneers jump out to an early 6-0 lead in the pivotal, momentum-shifting second set. "Being one of the seniors on the team, I've tried to just to be a good leader and role model on the floor, rely on my experience and have a little bit of a calming effect out there. It's been a lot of fun to be a part of it.
"Coming off the big victory Friday night, we were a little tired but worked hard and did what we needed to do. When we were able to maintain our intensity and minimize the number of errors, everything came together."
Carroll ninth-year head coach
Becca Saal was encouraged by how her team carried over the momentum created from Friday's CCIW opening victory, continued to play with enthusiasm and showed its depth throughout the day.Â
"We have a lot of options as far as who can be on the court at a given time so it has really created a lot of friendly competition," said Saal, of her team's balanced, multi-dimensional attack. "Regardless of who is out there competing, there's a lot of support for one another and cheering from the sidelines. From that standpoint, we really do act and compete as a family. It's just really cool to see and I'm very proud of how they have come together."
Freshman middle blocker Sophia Galassini had six kills and an ace for Lawrence, which dropped to 1-16 overall.
