Carroll falls in confidence-building five-set thriller

Pioneers open Concordia University of Wisconsin Quad with loss to UW-Stevens Point

MEQUON, Wis. - Senior outside hitter Cassidy Mrotek (Manitowoc, Wis.) contributed a team-high 11 kills and 17 digs as the Carroll University women's volleyball team lost to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point 25-22, 25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 15-6 in a five-set nonconference dual to open the Concordia University of Wisconsin quadrangular Saturday afternoon.
It was the second five-set loss of the season for Carroll, who had won three straight coming into the weekend but dropped to 14-12 overall.
Trailing 2-0 after the opening two sets, the Pioneers demonstrated their focus, composure and mental toughness by earning victories in the pivotal third and fourth sets.
Tied 3-3 in the decisive fifth set, UW-Stevens Point responded with a 12-3 run - including five unanswered points - to pull away.
Senior outside hitter Sydney Wilkins (Portage, Ind.) followed with nine kills for the Pioneers, who finished with 65 points, 51 kills, 51 assists, 10 blocks, 90 digs and four service aces in the marathon battle. Junior middle blocker Rachel Noonan (Crystal Lake, Ill.) collected eight kills, five blocks and two aces.
Senior opposite hitter/middle blocker Erika Dunnam (Shawano, Wis.) finished with eight kills and six blocks, freshman middle blocker MacKenzie Olson (Rock Falls, Ill.) had five blocks and freshman defensive specialist Emily Konop (Oregon, Wis.) had 20 digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Griepentrog (DePere, Wis.) had 12 digs with senior setters Emma Przeslicke (Evergreen Park, Ill.) and Jennilyn Joy Cave (Bolingbrook, Ill.) each adding 24 assists.
April Gehl finished with a team-high 16 kills, four assists, three blocks and a service ace for UW-Stevens Point, which entered the contest hovering just out of the Top-25 and improved to 22-7 overall. Tara Emme followed with 15 kills with Ellie Adams adding two aces and 51 assists.
