Pios suffer disheartening late-season conference loss

Carroll remains in hunt for CCIW Tournament berth with one regular-season league dual remaining

WHEATON, Ill. - Senior outside hitter Cassidy Mrotek (Manitowoc, Wis.) contributed a team-high 10 kills, 16 digs and a service ace as the Carroll University women's volleyball team was swept by Wheaton 25-18, 25-22, 25-21 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game Wednesday night.
It was a disheartening road loss for Carroll, which dropped to 3-4 in the highly contested conference standings and 14-14 overall.
The Pioneers, who are seeking their second consecutive trip to the prestigious six-team CCIW Tournament, are currently in sixth place in the conference with one regular-season league dual remaining - a road matchup at North Park on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 4 p.m.
Carthage captured the regular-season conference title with an 8-0 record to claim the No.1 seed in the tournament. Illinois Wesleyan (6-2), Millikin (6-2), Elmhurst (4-4) and Augustana (4-4) have clinched the other four spots.
Junior middle blocker Rachel Noonan (Crystal Lake, Ill.) followed with five kills, five blocks and two aces for the Pioneers. Senior outside hitter Kylie Mueller (Fox Lake, Ill.) collected five kills and three blocks while senior opposite hitter/middle blocker Erika Dunnam (Shawano, Wis.) finished with five kills and freshman defensive specialist Emily Konop (Oregon, Wis.) had 14 digs.
Senior setter Emma Przeslicke (Evergreen Park, Ill.) added nine digs and 15 assists.
Colleen Smith finished with 12 kills and two aces for Wheaton, which improved to 3-5 in conference and 16-11 overall.
