Promising first-half comeback not enough in CCIW loss

Pioneers fall to defending league co-champion Illinois Wesleyan in difficult road test

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Carroll University football team's growing pains continued as it lost to defending league co-champion Illinois Wesleyan University 42-14 in a windy, overcast College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game at Tucci Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
It was the third consecutive conference loss for Carroll, which dropped to 0-3 in the league standings and 1-3 overall.
Illinois Wesleyan, which generated a season-high point total, won its second straight and improved to 2-1 in conference and 2-2 overall with the homecoming victory.
The Titans, who received votes and entered the contest hovering just out of the top-25 in the latest American Football Coaches Association NCAA Division III national rankings, led 28-14 after three quarters and scored 14 unanswered points over the course of the final 15 minutes to put the game away.
Senior quarterback Brandon Bauer completed 20 of 30 passes for 261 yards and two touchdowns for IWU, which amassed 29 first downs and 539 yards of total offense - 259 yards coming behind its ground attack. Sophomore running back Hamid Bullie rushed 15 times for 156 yards and a touchdown and senior wide receiver Bryce Dooley finished with six catches for 99 yards and a TD.
Junior quarterback Michael Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis.) completed 17 of 24 passes for 285 yards and two touchdowns despite being sacked eight times in leading Carroll, which generated 10 first downs.
Trailing 14-0 in the second quarter, Carroll answered as Johnson connected with freshman wide receiver Austin Eichstaedt (Cudahy, Wis.) on a 5-yard TD pass to cap a confidence-building seven-play, 75-yard drive with 7:01 remaining in the first half.
The momentum was short lived as IWU senior Dean Zigulich responded with a 96-yard kick-off return 13 seconds later to extend the lead to 21-7 with 6:48 left.
Carroll, which converted 4 of 12 times on third down,  trimmed the deficit to 21-14 to open the second half as senior tight end David Meza (Berlin, Wis.) scored on 68-yard pass from Johnson with 14:04 remaining in the third quarter - capping an efficient three-play, 73-yard drive.
Sophomore wide receiver Alex Kujawa (Oshkosh, Wis.) continued his standout individual season by finishing with a team-best six catches for 142 yards to record his third 100-yard receiving day - including a 45-yard reception in the second quarter. Meza followed with five catches for 96 yards with freshman wide receiver J.R. Muth (Greendale, Wis.) adding two catches for 25 yards.
Senior defensive back Justin Robles (Belvidere, Ill.) and sophomore defensive back Johnathan Rau (West Allis, Wis.) each registered a team-high 10 tackles for the Carroll defense. Junior linebacker Zach Netchin (Glendale Heights, Ill.) contributed nine tackles while junior linebacker Justin Kontny (Milwaukee, Wis.) had eight tackles and a sack. Sophomore Carson Roseleip (Oconomowoc, Wis.) punted seven times, finishing with a 39.9 average.
