Carroll dominates in home opener

Gruber scores career-high 15 points to power Pioneers in nonconference victory over Lakeland

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Junior guard Justin Gruber (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) scored 10 of his career-high 15 points in the first half to lead the Carroll University men's basketball team to a 98-49 victory over Lakeland University in a nonconference game at Van Male Field House on Sunday afternoon.
It was the home opener for Carroll, which improved to 2-0 overall with the dominant Waukesha Community Day performance (sponsored by Nicholas Investments).
Gruber also contributed three baskets from 3-point range, 4 of 4 free throws, five rebounds, four assists and two steals in playing a productive 21 minutes for the Pioneers, who showcased their talent, depth and balance with 12 players reaching the scoring column - including six individuals finishing in double figures.
Carroll outscored the Muskies 52-27 in the decisive first half, powered by an explosive, momentum-shifting 23-8 run over the course of the opening seven minutes of the contest.
The victory took on added significance as it was the most points generated in a game by the Pioneers since Nov. 10, 2018 (a 100-63 home-court nonconference victory over Rockford University).
Senior forward Kale Maupin (Peotone, Ill.) and junior guard Ryan Clarey (Pewaukee, Wis.) each followed with 14 points for Carroll, which made 14 3-pointers, 14 of 23 free throws and shot 61.4 percent from field-goal range. Senior guard Nick Penny (Lake Zurich, Ill.) finished with 12 points with four 3-pointers, a team-best seven rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Senior forward Charlie Soule (Oregon, Wis.) and junior guard/forward Tarren Hall (New Lisbon, Wis.) each chipped in 11 points for the Pioneers, who outrebounded Lakeland 43-30 - maintaining a 35-17 advantage on the defensive glass. Sophomore guard/forward Blake Williams (Lone Tree, Colo.) had seven points and sophomore guard Gio Carrillo (Rolling Meadows, Ill.) added six points.
Carlos Campos scored a game-high 17 points with three 3-pointers for Lakeland, which made five 3-pointers, 10 of 24 free throws and shot 28.8 percent from the field.
