Appleton, Wis. – The Carroll University Pioneers went into halftime with a one-point lead, but were unable to finish against the non-conference opponent in Lawrence University. Sophomore
Sierra Grubor (Milwaukee, Wis., Whitnall) lead the way with 21 points and 3 rebounds.
The Pioneers shot 40.9% from behind the three-point line, with sophomores
Theresa Wichser (Waukesha, Wis., Brookfield Academy) and
Alyssa Cruz (West Allis, Wis., Nathan Hale) each making three each. Cruz also led the team with six assists. The women also led the battle with 26 points off the bench coming from
Megan Madsen (Johnsburg, Ill., Johnsburg),
Kate Christian (New London, Wis., New London),
Hailey Herriges (Kewaskum, Wis., Kewaskum), and
Brooke Foster (Racine, Wis., The Prairie School) with 8, 7, 4 and 4, respectively.
The Pioneers jumped out to a quick 10-5 lead with help from three point jumpers from Wichser and Cruz, but the Vikings stormed back to tie the game at 14. Foster laid in a bucket in the paint to end the scoring in the first quarter. The second quarter was back to back scoring, with both teams not giving up a lead larger than three.
The third quarter started slow for the Pios, not scoring a bucket until 5:31 remaining in the quarter. Madsen broke the Viking's scoring streak with a lay-up, followed by Grubor free throws not long after. Christian was able to bring the Pioneers within one with a minute left. Lawrence was just too much to handle in the fourth quarter, going up by at most 10 during the fourth quarter.
The Pioneers will continue on the road and will travel mid-week to DePere for a match-up with St. Norbert on Nov. 20 at 7 PM.
