Strong first half powers Pios in nonconference victory

Penny scores 14 points to lead balanced attack in home-court rout of Martin Luther

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Nick Penny  provided the spark.
Penny, a 6-foot-2 senior guard from Lake Zurich, Ill., emphasized that by scoring 12 of his team-high 14 points in the first half as the Carroll University men's basketball team defeated Martin Luther College 89-52 in a nonconference game at Van Male Field House on Tuesday afternoon.
It was the third home-court victory for Carroll, which generated its second highest point total of the early season and improved to 6-1 overall heading into the Thanksgiving break.
The Pioneers outscored Martin Luther 50-19 in the first half, including a critical 16-2 run over the course of the opening seven minutes.
Penny, who scored Carroll's first seven points of the contest, ignited the statement-making run by making an aggressive mid-court steal and finishing with a layup, followed with a wide-open 3-point basket from the right baseline off an assist from sophomore guard/forward Blake Williams and demonstrated his versatility by converting a jump shot from the left side of the perimeter to extend the lead to 7-2 with 15:55 remaining in the first half.
"Coming off a tough loss to a really good team (referring to an 86-78 home-court loss to No. 14-ranked Wabash College in the finals of the Nicholas Investments Pre-Thanksgiving Classic last weekend), we wanted to come out strong and play with a sense of urgency right off the bat because we didn't want to let it continue to linger in our minds," said Penny, a second-team all-conference selection in the talent-laden CCIW last season. "There are going to be setbacks during the season so it was a good opportunity to work through the experience and bounce back from it.
"Individually, I tried to be more aggressive but it was really about taking what they were giving us. Once the defense focused on one area to shut down, it opened up things for the shooters and we just attempted to finish each time."
Penny was quick to point out that the dominant effort was the result of the entire roster making valuable contributions.
"We feel like we have the greatest bench in (NCAA) Division III so it was a good feeling to watch the guys come in, make the most of situation and contribute valuable minutes to the victory," Penny said. "They are very good, kick our butts in practice all the time and consistently show the depth that we have throughout the roster. We truly don't miss a beat when they come in the game. With so much talent, it can be frustrating when players don't get a lot of minutes so it was great to see everyone take advantage. This was a nice confidence booster so now we just have to keep it up and not miss a step heading into the CCIW opener."

Carroll showcased its balance, depth and athleticism with 16 players reaching the scoring column, including four players in double figures.
Senior forward Charlie Soule, junior guard Tarren Hall and Williams each followed with 10 points for the Pioneers, who converted 12 3-pointers, 5 of 10 free throws and shot 54.5 percent from field-goal range.
Soule finished with a team-best seven rebounds and an assist for the Pioneers, who forced 27 turnovers and outrebounded the Knights 36-26 - maintaining a 29-21 advantage on the defensive glass. Hall contributed two 3-pointers, three rebounds and a steal with Williams chipping in with two 3-pointers, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Junior point guard Ryan Clarey had eight points, four assists and three steals for Carroll, which showcased its unselfishness by registering 22 assists.
Freshman guard Seb Lees collected six points with sophomore forward Dylan Ingebrigtsen and freshman guard Rocco Ronzio each adding five points.
Senior forward Kale Maupin and sophomore forward Tanner Hoffman each collected four points while sophomore guard Gio Carrillo and freshman guard Ethan Balinao had three points each. Junior guard Justin Gruber, senior guard Cal Jarrett and freshman forward Carter Sturgeon each finished with two points and senior guard David Anilus had one point to round out the scoring for the Pioneers.
"The guys were really hungry coming off their first loss of the season and first at home so we really stressed the importance of having a short memory and bouncing back strong from it," Carroll seventh-year head coach Paul Combs said. "We played Saturday and had the opportunity to jump right back in and play another game. Coming in, we were well prepared and from beginning to end across the board delivered a complete team effort.
"We got off to a fast start, shared the ball well and did a lot of nice things especially on the offensive end. It helped early on when we made shots and it just became contagious. It was an important victory because we don't play again until next Wednesday with the CCIW opener against North Park. It was good to get back on the winning track, do it at home and now have a chance to spend time with family and friends. We have a lot to be thankful for as a program so it seemed only fitting that we would head into Thanksgiving on a high note."

Freshman guard Micah Kieselhorst scored a team-high 10 points for Martin Luther, which dropped to 1-2 overall. Junior forward Jacob Price had nine points and senior forward Ian Paulsen added eight points for the Knights, who made seven 3-pointers and shot 36.2 percent from the field.
