Pioneers impressive in CCIW opener

Critical second-half scoring surge powers Carroll to road victory over North Park

CHICAGO, Ill. - Sophomore guard/forward Blake Williams contributed a game-high 17 points with two baskets from 3-point range, five rebounds, four assists, two steals and a blocked shot in playing 28 minutes as the Carroll University men's basketball team defeated North Park University 75-63 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin opener Wednesday night.
It was the second consecutive victory for Carroll, which improved to 7-1 overall.
The convincing performance - the first of three straight challenging early-season league road games - took on added meaning as it marked the Pioneers' best start since the beginning of the 2015-16 season.
Carroll led 55-50 with 10:35 remaining but answered the challenge by outscoring the Vikings 20-13 over the course of the final 10 minutes - powered by an 8-1 run over a key, momentum-shifting two-minute stretch.
The decisive run was ignited on a layup by senior guard Nick Penny with 10:16 left, an inside basket and free throw from senior forward Kale Maupin and capped on a long-range 3-pointer by Penny.
Carroll showcased its balance and depth with seven players reaching the scoring column, including five in double figures.
Senior forward Charlie Soule followed with 15 points with 3 of 3 free throws, team-best nine rebounds, two steals and an assist for the Pioneers, who converted nine 3-pointers, 8 of 12 free throws and shot 52.7 percent (29 of 55) from field-goal range. Maupin also had 15 points with 3 of 4 free throws, seven rebounds, team-high six assists and a steal.
Penny had 11 points with three 3-pointers, five rebounds, two blocked shots and an assist for Carroll, which scored 34 points in the paint, displayed its unselfishness by generating 17 assists and maintained a 34-28 rebound advantage - highlighted by a 26-21 margin on the defensive glass.
Junior guard Ryan Clarey chipped in 11 points with two 3-pointers, five assists, three rebounds and a steal. Senior guard David Anilus and junior guard Tarren Hall each added three points.
Junior guard Matt Szuba and junior guard Toby Marek each scored a team-high 14 points for North Park, which dropped to 1-4 overall. Junior guard Izaiah Sanders had 12 points for the Vikings, who made seven 3-pointers and shot 45.8 percent (27 of 59) from the field.
