Carroll falls in overtime thriller

Pioneers come up short in CCIW road battle with No. 24-ranked Augustana

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Senior guard Nick Penny and sophomore guard/forward Blake Williams each scored a team-high 13 points but it wasn't enough as the Carroll University men's basketball team lost to No. 24-ranked Augustana College 65-63 in overtime to cap a wild, tension-filled College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game at the Roy J. Carver Center on Saturday night.
It was the first conference road loss of the season for Carroll, which entered the contest riding the momentum of back-to-back victories but dropped to 1-1 in the highly contested league standings and 7-2 overall (with both of its losses coming to nationally ranked programs).
Trailing 60-57 with time winding down, Carroll responded as senior forward Charlie Soule converted a high-arcing, buzzer-beating 3-point basket from the right baseline to force overtime.
Faced with the daunting task of playing without two starters who fouled out during regulation, the Pioneers battled to trim the deficit to 64-63 following a clutch 3-point basket by sophomore forward Dylan Ingebrigtsen from the top, left side of the perimeter with 1:22 left in the five-minute extra period.
Following a missed jump shot by Augustana, Carroll remained down by one point and attempted to capitalize on a potential game-winning opportunity with five seconds remaining but came up empty on the front end of the bonus situation.
It was a stunning, gut-wrenching turn of events for Carroll, which trailed by as many as 15 points in the second half but demonstrated its resilience by outscoring the high-powered Vikings 37-30 in the pressure-packed second half - including a 13-7 run over the course of the final six minutes.
Soule contributed nine points with 4 of 5 free throws for the Pioneers, who made seven 3-pointers, 12 of 18 free throws and shot 40 percent from field-goal range. Junior guard Tarren Hall followed with eight points, senior guard David Anilus chipped in seven points and senior forward Kale Maupin had six points.
Junior guard Ryan Clarey added four points and team-best five assists for Carroll, which committed 17 turnovers and was outrebounded 35-25 - including a 30-18 margin on the defensive glass.
Senior guard Austin Elledge scored a game-high 16 points to lead Augustana, which won its conference opener to improve to 5-2 overall. Senior 6-foot-11 center Micah Martin had 11 points, eight rebounds, six blocked shots and a steal for the Vikings, who made four 3-pointers, 17 of 27 free throws, generated 20 fast-break points and shot 57.9 percent from the field.
Augustana committed an uncharacteristic 25 turnovers in the physical, uptempo showdown.
