Pios bounce back with resilient conference road victory

Penny scores season-high 18 points as Carroll defeats Millikin 70-63 in CCIW battle

DECATUR, Ill. - Senior guard Nick Penny contributed a season-high 18 points with three baskets from 3-point range, 7 of 7 free throws, three assists, two rebounds and two steals in playing a resourceful 34 minutes as the Carroll University men's basketball team defeated Millikin University 70-63 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin at the Griswold Center on Saturday afternoon.
It was an important bounce-back victory for Carroll, which erased the memory of last weekend's stinging 65-63 loss to No. 24-ranked Augustana College by improving to 2-1 in the highly contested league standings and 8-2 overall (with its two losses coming at the hands of nationally ranked programs).
The resilient performance completed a challenging stretch of three consecutive early-season conference road games for the Pioneers, who built a 34-26 halftime lead.
Carroll led 59-56 late in the contest and demonstrated its composure by responding with a critical 11-7 run over the course of the final four minutes.
Junior guard Tarren Hall converted a clutch 3-pointer to ignite the key run with 3:47 left, senior forward Charlie Soule had a layup and Penny made six straight free throws within the final 33 seconds to seal the team's fourth road win of the season.
Carroll - off to its best start since the 2015-16 season and seeking its second consecutive CCIW Tournament berth - showcased its balance and depth with eight players reached the scoring column, highlighted by three in double figures.
Soule finished with 12 points, a team-best four assists and three rebounds for the Pioneers, who converted nine 3-pointers, 9 of 12 free throws and shot 46.4 percent (26-for-56) from field-goal range. Junior guard Ryan Clarey chipped in 12 points with two 3-pointers, two rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Sophomore guard/forward Blake Williams followed with nine points, senior forward Kale Maupin had eight points and Hall added six points for Carroll, which scored 20 fast-break points, generated 15 assists and forced 25 turnovers.
Six-foot-six sophomore guard Calvin Fisher scored a team-high 17 points with two 3-pointers, seven assists, six rebounds and a blocked shot for Millikin, which dropped to 0-3 in conference and 2-9 overall. Senior guard Zach Fisher had 14 points, four rebounds and three assists for the Big Blue, who made three 3-pointers, shot 70 percent from the field and maintained a 27-18 rebound advantage.
