Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Second-half comeback falls short in first game of Florida tourney

Pioneers fall to Marymount University 55-51 to begin Daytona Beach Shootout

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Senior guard Nick Penny scored a season-high 21 points with two baskets from 3-point range, 5 of 5 free throws, five rebounds and an assist in playing 36 minutes as the Carroll University men's basketball team lost to Marymount University 55-51 in its first game of the Daytona Beach Shootout at the Ocean Center on Saturday evening.
It was the first tournament game of a challenging Florida holiday trip for Carroll, which entered the contest riding the momentum of a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin road victory over Millikin (70-63) on Dec. 14 but dropped to 8-3 overall with the tough, hard-fought nonconference performance.
Each of the Pioneers' three losses this season (including two against nationally ranked programs) have come by eight points or less.
Carroll trailed by as many as 13 points in the opening minute of the second half but demonstrated its poise, focus and determination by battling back to tie the game four times before eventually taking a 49-48 lead on a free throw by Penny following a Marymount technical foul with 2:15 remaining.
Senior forward Charlie Soule finished on an aggressive inside basket to extend the lead to 51-48 with 1:46 left but it wasn't enough as the Pioneers committed four costly turnovers and yielded seven unanswered points down the stretch.
Marymount made 5 of 6 free throws within the final 15 seconds to preserve a victory.
Senior forward Kale Maupin - who showcased his mental toughness by battling back from a nagging ankle injury suffered in the second half - followed with seven points, four rebounds, two steals and an assist for Carroll, which converted 9 of 11 free throws, four 3-pointers and shot 35.2 percent from field-goal range. Soule contributed six points, a team-best eight rebounds and three steals.
Junior guard Tarren Hall had five points with junior guard/forward Blake Williams,  junior guard Ryan Clarey and sophomore forward Dylan Ingebrigtsen each adding four points.
Senior guard Ibrahim Kamara finished with a team-high 15 points, seven rebounds, two blocked shots, a steal and an assist for Marymount, which improved to 7-4 overall. Senior guards Taiga Walker and LaDarius McCord each had eight points for the Saints, who made five 3-pointers, 18 of 26 free throws and shot 32.7 percent from field-goal range.
