Soule, Penny, Maupin lead balanced attack as Carroll defeats Rockford in nonconference road test

ROCKFORD, Ill. - Senior forward Charlie Soule (Oregon, Wis.)  scored 14 of his team-high 19 points in the second half to lead the Carroll University men's basketball team to a 74-64 victory over Rockford University in a season-opening nonconference game Friday night.
Soule also converted 5 of 6 free throws, pulled down seven rebounds and had three assists in playing a team-best 38 minutes for Carroll, which outscored the Regents 37-28 in what proved to be a decisive first half - powered by a momentum-shifting 21-9 run over the course of the opening nine minutes.
Rockford, which was outscored 37-36 in the second half, trimmed the deficit to 63-57 on a layup with 5:50 remaining but couldn't get any closer.
Carroll showcased its balance and depth with eight players reaching the scoring column, highlighted by three individuals in double figures.
Senior guard Nick Penny (Lake Zurich, Ill.) contributed 17 points with five baskets from 3-point range, five rebounds and a blocked shot for the Pioneers, who made 17 of 20 free throws, converted nine 3-pointers and shot 43.6 percent from field-goal range. Senior forward Kale Maupin (Peotone, Ill.) followed with 12 points, six rebounds, three steals and an assist for Carroll, which forced 19 turnovers and demonstrated its unselfishness by registering 15 assists in the contest. Junior guard/forward Tarren Hall (New Lisbon, Wis.) made 4 of 4 free throws en route to finishing with seven points.
Sophomore guard/forward Blake Williams (Lone Tree, Colo.) collected six points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal for Carroll, which shot 90.9 percent (10 of 11) from the free-throw line in the second half.
The victory took on special meaning for junior guard Justin Gruber (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) who made a triumphant return to the court by chipping in six points in 10 minutes - successfully overcoming a fractured leg injury that sidelined him for the majority of last season.
Junior guard Ryan Clarey (Pewaukee, Wis.) added four points, four rebounds, five assists, three steals and a blocked shot.
Nathaniel Shead scored 18 points and Brandon Emerick had 17 points for Rockford, which made 11 3-pointers, 13 of 19 free throws and shot 41.7 percent from the field.
