Strong start falls short versus No. 7 St. Thomas

Pioneers finish 1-2 at season-opening Rochester Dome Tournament

ROCHESTER, Minn. - Junior left fielder Rosalie Jrolf (Dousman, Wis.) went 3-for-4 and drove in a run as the Carroll University softball team lost to No. 7-ranked University of St. Thomas 6-4 in the finale of the Rochester Dome Tournament at the RCTC Dome on Sunday afternoon.
Carroll, which dropped to 1-2 overall, faced two Top 10-ranked teams in the challenging, character-building two-day season-opening competition.
The Pioneers, who advanced to the prestigious College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin Tournament last year, were originally scheduled to play two games to conclude the tournament Sunday but the schedule was adjusted because of the bad weather conditions.
Carroll scored four unanswered runs on four hits in the top of the first inning, powered on an RBI double to left field by Jrolf,  a run-scoring single by junior third baseman Lexy Kemnitzer (McFarland, Wis.) and a two-run single to center field by freshman first baseman Kaylee Learman (Greenwood, Wis.).
The Pioneers, who collected nine hits in the gritty battle, stranded nine baserunners.
Univ. of St. Thomas, which improved to 4-0 overall, answered with two runs in the bottom of the third, one in the fifth and three in the decisive seventh.
Junior third baseman Elise Barnes delivered an RBI ground-rule double to tie the game 4-4 in the seventh for the Tommies, who collected nine hits. Senior center fielder Chase Shortly followed with a game-winning walk-off, two-run ground-rule double.
Carroll junior right-hander Amanda Osterhus (Munster, Ind.) took the pitching loss, allowing four earned runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts and one walk through six complete innings.
