Pios Fall Short in Slugfest

TUCSON, Ariz. - Carroll University (2-5, 0-0 CCIW) lost a gut-wrenching 14-13 defeat to NAIA opponent Northwestern College (IA) on Monday afternoon.

On day that both teams combined for 27 runs and 32 hits, offense took center stage.  Both teams traded three run opening innings and would battle back-and-forth to the final at bat.
The big inning came in the bottom of the eighth for Northwestern.  Carroll held a two run lead to start the inning.  After playing error free baseball for the initial seven innings, a pair of costly errors following a pair of hits and a walk, would eventually lead to three runs and a 14-13 lead for the home team.

Carroll would get the tying runner on base in the top of the eighth but would strand him at first as the final out was recorded.

The outcome overshadows a tremendous offensive output for the Pioneers.  Mathew Putman continues to amaze at the plate.  Putman would rack up four more hits while scoring four runs and driving in three, the big blow a homerun to leftfield in the fourth inning.

Junior Dylan Callahan also recorded four hits while driving in three, the big hit a two-run double following a Putman intentional walk in the eighth inning that game the Pios a 13-11 lead at the time.

Carroll University will look to rebound on Tuesday as they face defending IAAC champion, the University of Dubuque at 12:30pm MST.
