Bullpen, Late Rally Spark Pios

ELGIN, Ill. - Carroll University (3-5, 0-0 CCIW) used four late runs to overcome an early deficit and secure a 8-6 victory Sunday afternoon over Waldorf University (7-12).

The Pioneers dug themselves an early hole as Waldorf would plate six runs in the first three innings on just three hits.  The Warriors offense received significant help by the Carroll pitching staff early, as they issued 10 walks in the first four innings.

The Pio offense would keep Carroll within striking distance.  A pair of runs in the second, one in the thirds and a single tally in the fifth innings would put the score at 6-4 after five complete.

In the top of the seventh the Pioneers would knot the game at six.  Juniors Dylan Callahan and Ethan Fleigle would both single to put runners at first and second with two-out.  Freshman Justin Baker would then drive a shot to the left-center gap to plate Callahan and Fleigle.

Carroll would take the lead in the top of the eighth.  Pinch-hitter AJ Lorenz would single sharply up the middle to lead of the inning and Matt Putman would advance him to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Callahan would single to put runners at the corners with one-out and sophomore Mitch Massino would drive in the runner from third on a ground out to put the Pios in front 7-6.

The top of the ninth would see the Pioneers plate an insurance run as freshman Josh Kolb would reach on a hit-by-pitch with one out and advance to third on a perfectly executed hit and run with Alex Kermendy. Kolb would then score on an errant pick-off attempt to give Carroll the 8-6 lead.

The hero on the mound for the Pios was senior Cameron Godinsky.  Godinsky came on in relief in the bottom of the sixth with two runners on and no outs. Godinsky would enduce a fielders choice, strike out and ground out to end the threat and keep Carroll within striking distance at 6-4.

Godinsky would finish the game to earn the victory and move to 2-0 on the season.  He would work the final four innings, surrendering just two hits, while walking none and striking out four.

Callahan would lead the offensive attack pounding out four of the Pios 15 hits on the afternoon. Baker, Kermendy and freshman Benton Holly would each collect a pair of hits on the afternoon.

Carroll will return to action next weekend as they travel to Terre Haute, Indiana for a four game weekend.  Carroll will face both Rose-Hulman and MSOE on Saturday and Sunday with game times at 2pm and 5pm Eastern time both days.
