CLERMONT, Fla. - Freshman center fielder
Sierra Grubor (Milwaukee, Wis.) went 3-for-4 and drove in what proved to be the winning run on a clutch, pressure-packed one-out RBI single in the top of the eighth inning as the Carroll University softball team defeated Bridgewater State University 2-1 in a nail-biting nonconference game to cap the third day of the PFX Spring Games at the Hancock Rec Complex on Monday afternoon.
It was the second straight victory and third by a one-run margin this season for Carroll, which improved to 5-1 on its Florida spring break trip and 6-3 overall.
On the game-winning sequence in the eighth, senior second baseman
Maggie Erdman (Jefferson, Wis.) was placed at second to begin the inning, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior right fielder
Annika Graves (Muskego, Wis.) and crossed the plate on Grubor's dramatic hit.
Junior right-hander
Lexy Kemnitzer (McFarland, Wis.), who came in relief of junior starter
Amanda Osterhus (Munster, Ind.) in the fourth, allowed just one hit with three strikeouts and no walks over the final five innings to earn the victory - finishing the final inning with a strikeout, a flyout and game-ending groundout.
Kemnitzer drove in Carroll's first run of the contest on an RBI single to right field in the sixth to tie the game.
Freshman designated player Emma Healy had an RBI bunt single in the bottom of the third for Bridgewater State, which dropped to 2-4 overall.
