Holly's Three Run Blast Leads Pios to Late Win

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll University (6-8, 0-1 CCIW) rallied for a late win against former Midwest Conference rival Ripon College (4-8, 0-0 MWC) on Thursday afternoon by the final score of 5-4.

Ripon took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a one out double and an RBI ground-ball single up the middle.

The Pios would knot the score at one in the bottom of the third as a two-out RBI single off the bat of Dylan Callahan would plate Adam Baade.

Ripon would retake the lead 3-1 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Carroll would answer in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Callahan would lead-off the inning reaching on a hit-by-pitch.  A pop-up and strikeout would leave Callahan at first with two-out.  Ethan Fleigle would walk to bring freshman Ben Holly to the plate.   Holly would promptly send a line-drive over the left-center field fence to give Carroll the 4-3 lead.

The Redhawks would again knot the score at four, as a lead-off error would generate an unearned run for Ripon.

The Pioneers would reclaim the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning.  Callahan would single to lead-off the inning and advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mitch Massino.  Callahan would then score on a TJ Pfaffle line-drive single to center field to give the Pios the 5-4 lead.

Ripon would treaten in the top of the ninth, a one out double and single to center would put runners at the corners with just one out.  A strikeout and ground ball to short would end the treat and seal the win for the Pios.

Curtis Sheahan was the Pio starter on the mound.  Sheahan would work five and a third strong innings.  Logan Johnson (1-0) would enter in the sixth and work the final eleven outs to pick up the win on the hill.  Johnson would strike out three without surrendering a run to seal the victory.

Carroll's double-header scheduled for Saturday against UW-Superior has been postponed and a final decision on the future of the twin-bill will be made on Friday.
