Pio Bats Wake Up, Smith Tosses Complete Game

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll University (7-9, 0-1 CCIW) rolled to a 15-5 victory on Monday afternoon over UW-Superior (5-7, 0-0 UMAC).
 
The Yellow Jackets would strike first in the opening inning as a lead-off hit batter would score on a two out double to give UW-Superior the 1-0 lead.
 
The Pioneers would answers in their half of the opening inning.  Matt Putman would draw a one-out walk and Dylan Callahan would single.  Putman would score on a double to the right-center field fence of the bat of Justin Baker for the first run of the inning.  Callahan would then cross the plate on an Alex Kermendy sacrifice fly and Baker would score on a Mitch Massino double to push the Pio lead to 3-1.
 
Superior would tally a single run in the top of the second to cut the deficit to 3-2, but a Callahan solo shot over the right-centerfield fence in the bottom of the third would extend the lead to 4-2.
 
A five run fourth inning would put some distance between the Pios and the Jackets.  Four singles and a pair of walks would fuel the big inning that extended the lead to 9-2.
 
UW-Superior would answer with a three run top of the fifth to close the gap to 9-5.
 
Massino would homer to center field following a Kermendy walk in the bottom of the sixth to push the Pio lead to 12-5.
 
Carroll would walk-off in the bottom of the seventh as a Baker two-run double would extend the lead to 14-5 and a Kermendy single would plate the final run as the Pios would win on the 10-run mercy rule.
 
Seth Smith (2-2) turned in his second consecutive solid outing on the mound.  Smith would work the complete game striking out four.
 
Carroll will be back in action on Tuesday as they return to conference play.  The Pios travel to North Park to face the Vikings in a 1pm double-header.
