WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll University (9-14, 1-6 CCIW) gave up a three-run homerun in the first and that proved to be all that Wheaton College (17-6, 7-3 CCIW) would need to secure the 5-1 win on a blustery Tuesday night.
Wheaton opened the game with ground-ball single through the left side of the infield and followed it up with a fly-ball to left field that the wind kept pushing and hit off the Pioneer outfielder's glove to put the first two runners of the game on. The next batter drove the ball deep over the left field fence to give Wheaton the 3-0 lead before the first out of the game could be recorded.
The Pios would get on the board in the bottom of the third inning. TJ Pfaffle would lead off the inning with a single to left field. Matt Putman would follow with a single to advance Pfaffle to second and back-to-back deep flyballs from Brad Vosters and Dylan Callahan would bring home Pfaffle to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Wheaton would tack on single runs in the fourth and eighth innings to push their advantage to 5-1.
Carroll would threaten in the bottom of the ninth bringing the tying run to the on-deck circle, but a sharply hit ground ball to the Wheaton shortstop would end the rally.
Adam Baade and Matt Putman would lead the Pio offense with a pair of hits apiece.
Andrew Stone (1-1) would continue to work his way back from injury. Stone worked sixth and two-thirds innings striking out five without issuing a walk.
Carroll is scheduled to return to action this weekend as they travel to Millikin University for a three-game series on Saturday on Sunday this week.
