WAUKESHA, Wis. – Carroll University (14-21, 6-13 CCIW) dropped the final game of the three game weekend series to Carthage College 7-2 on Sunday afternoon.
Carroll dug itself an early hole as Carthage would score a pair of unearned runs in the first and four more runs in the second to take the quick 6-0 lead.
The Pioneers had opportunities to get themselves back into the game early. In the bottom of the third inning, the Pios would load the bases with no outs. However, a ground ball fielder's choice to record the first out at home followed by an inning ending double play ball would leave Carroll still scoreless.
The Pios would again load the bases in the fifth, this time breaking the ice with an Alex Kermendy two-run single to cut the lead to 6-2. However, the Pios would leave a pair stranded, as they stranded nine runners on the day.
Carthage would add an insurance run in the top of the sixth on a solo homerun that snuck over the left field fence, to push the final score to 7-2.
Cameron Godinsky (5-4) took the tough luck loss. Godinsky surrendered seven runs, but only two were earned. Freshman Josh Nitch was a bright spot working two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Carroll is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday at Wheaton College, a double-header slated to start at 3pm.
