WAUKESHA, Wis. – Carroll University (9-13, 1-5 CCIW) came back from an eight run deficit to win in ten innings, 13-12 over Illinois Wesleyan on Sunday morning.
The Pioneers found themselves trailing 9-1 going into the bottom of the second inning on the power of four Titan homeruns.
The Pios hit their way back into the game with four runs in the bottom of the second inning and three more in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 9-8.
Carroll's starting pitcher Cam Godinsky, would settle in after a rough two innings to provide a solid third, fourth and fifth innings to allow the Pios to get back into the game.
Back-to-back-to-back doubles to start the top of the sixth lead to a pair of IWU runs to extend their lead to 11-8 and a single run in the top of the eighth would push the advantage to 12-8.
Carroll would tie the game with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Dylan Callahan would single home Matt Putman to start the scoring. Justin Baker would double to the left-center fence to score Brad Vosters for the second run. An Alex Kermendy sacrifice fly would plate Callahan and Adam Baade would single to score Baker to knot the score at 12.
The Pios would threaten in the ninth as Putman would draw a one-out walk and pinch runner Matt Pestel would advance to second on a ground out, but a Callahan hard hit line-drive was right at the centerfielder to end the threat.
Justin Baker would single to lead off the bottom of the tenth. Kermendy would beat out a push bunt to the right side of the infield to put runners at first and second. Baade would then keep the line going dropping down a bunt to the third-base side and beating the throw to load the bases with no one out. Sam Harmeyer would then send a full-count fly ball to shallow right field allowing Baker to tag and score the winning run.
The Pioneers would pound out 15 hits in the extra-inning win. Brad Vosters and Justin Baker would lead the way with three hits apiece.
Carroll returns to action on Wednesday as they host Wheaton for a single game at 6pm.
