Seth Smith Takes No-Hit Bid to Eighth Inning, Pios Win 5-1

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Carroll University (15-23, 7-15 CCIW) picked up a 5-1 win in the first of a three game series against Augustana on Friday night by the final score 5-1.

The story of the night was junior right-hander Seth Smith who was brilliant on the mound.  Smith took a no-hit bid into the eighth inning.  With two outs in the eighth the bid was broken up on a ground ball through the left side of the infield.  Smith (3-5) got the next batter in the eighth to fly out to center.   Smith would work the ninth inning, striking out the first two batters before walking a pair and giving up a bloop single to score the only run of the night for the Vikings.  Smith would finish the game striking out the final batter looking on a curveball.

Offensively, Carroll would get on the board in the bottom of the first inning.  Brad Vosters would draw a one-out walk, his first of four walks drawn on the day, to start the rally.  Matt Putman would single to right and Vosters would advance to third.   Dylan Callahan would single to the left side of the infield to give the Pios the early 1-0 lead.  After a strike out for out number two, Alex Kermendy would line a ball of the end of the third baseman's glove to drive home Putman for the 2-0 lead.

Carroll would add to their lead in the sixth inning.  Danny Glampe would single to lead-off the inning.  Matt Pestel would pinch run for Glampe and advance to third on a perfectly executed hit and run, with Kermendy lining to a single to right.  Sam Harmeyer would battle with two strikes, fouling off multiple pitches before hitting a one hop ground ball to shortstop that would plate Pestel for the 3-0 lead.   With two outs in the inning TJ Pfaffle would double to left-center and score on a Josh Kolb single to push the Pio lead to 4-0.

Kermendy would double to lead-off the eighth inning and following a Harmeyer bunt single would score on a Pfaffle single to push the lead to 5-0.

Kermendy would pace the offense finishing the game 3x4 with a pair of doubles, a run scored and a run driven in.

The Pios will wrap up their season and the series with Augustana on Saturday with a twinbill starting at noon.
