Carroll shines in home opener

Campbell scores winning goal in 79th minute as Pioneers edge Lewis & Clark for first victory of season

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Brookelyn Campbell's split-second, heads-up reaction made the difference.
Campbell, a 6-foot junior forward from Oconomowoc, Wis., scored the winning goal on a header at the 78:54 mark to lead the Carroll University women's soccer team to a tension-filled 2-1 victory over Lewis & Clark College in a fast-paced, physical nonconference home opener at Schneider Stadium on Monday.
It was the first victory of the season for Carroll, which improved to 1-1 overall with the gritty Labor Day performance.
On the game-winning sequence in the 79th minute, sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Zanon (Waukesha, Wis.) served up a curving, high-arcing corner kick from the right side toward the middle of the box.
Campbell, who was positioned perfectly inside, timed her leap above the defenders and promptly headed the ball into the right, back corner of the net.
"Being one of the taller girls on the field, I really wanted to step up and try to finish on one of the corners," said a smiling Campbell, of her memorable, pressure-packed first goal of the season. "Prior to the play, our coaches adjusted the line in order to help put us in better position. KZ (Kaitlyn Zanon) does a great job with the corner kicks and always puts the ball in the perfect spot so it was great to be able to capitalize on it. After leaping to make contact, I just hoped something good would happen. When the ball went in, I was very happy and proud to see everything come together.
"It all started with the motivation provided by our team captains and coaching staff. When everyone on the bench was wild and hyped up, it really gave us an extra spring in our step in order to push through the situation. This game was for our seniors so it was even more meaningful to execute on a big play, come away with a victory and ring the bell afterwards."

It proved to be the decisive play as Lewis & Clark came up empty on five shots within the final 10 minutes.
Lewis & Clark, which dropped to 0-1-1 overall, collected the first goal of the game as freshman forward Julia Markmann scored an unassisted shot in the third minute.
Carroll tied the game 1-1 as freshman midfielder/forward Simone Lippmann (Lindenhurst, Ill.) scored off an assist from sophomore forward Erika Hess (Green Bay, Wis.) at the 9:46 mark.
Senior goalkeeper Christina O' Block (Libertyville, Ill.) was a stabilizing force throughout the contest, registering five critical saves - including three within the final nine minutes - to help preserve a victory.
Carroll eighth-year head coach Susie Foster was proud of how her team responded to the challenge of playing at home for the first time this season.
"During the season opener (referring to a season-opening 1-0 road loss to Lake Forest on Aug. 31), we were a little hesitant to take risks, played with a bit of a safety net on and struggled to maintain some of the momentum. It wasn't from a lack of care but more the result of simply trying to do the right things," said Foster, whose team commemorated the home-opening win by ringing the bright orange Carroll Victory Bell positioned at the corner of the field. "After that happened, our senior group took the entire team under its wing, seized ownership of the situation in the days that followed and really attempted to show what it takes to deliver a complete, inspired effort from beginning to end.
"Today, we were a completely different team, played with a lot of fire each step of the way and everyone on the roster contributed. From the players to the coaches, we were all in, completely invested in the game and came through with an inspirational effort. In soccer, successful teams have the ability to play from behind so it was great to answer the challenge and rise to the occasion. It was a gritty, hard-fought effort the entire way and we are very happy with the end result.
"Looking back, it was super exciting to be able to take the next step forward but it was about much more than just one play. It was more about the complete effort and what we did leading up to the winning shot and how we competed with intensity after it happened."

Lewis & Clark outshot Carroll 16-10 but both squads finished with six shot-on-goal opportunities.
