Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | By Jeff Hagenau

Pioneers win second straight

Zanon scores two goals as Carroll earns 3-0 shutout versus Wisconsin Lutheran

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Kaitlyn Zanon was ready for prime time.
Zanon, a 5-foot-2 sophomore midfielder from Waukesha, Wis., clearly emphasized that point by scoring two unassisted goals as the young, scrappy Carroll University women's soccer team defeated Wisconsin Lutheran 3-0 in a nonconference game at Schneider Stadium on Friday night.
It was the first shutout victory of the early season for Carroll, which won its second consecutive home game to improve to 2-1 overall.
Carroll collected what proved to be the winning goal as senior defender Amber Goodreau (Sussex, Wis.) scored off an assist from junior forward Brookelyn Campbell (Oconomowoc, Wis.) at the 8:12 mark.
Zanon, one of 14 sophomores on the talent-rich roster, fired a high-arcing corner kick from the left side that landed within the right, back corner of the net in the 18th minute to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Pioneers' final goal came as Zanon converted on an aggressive, hard-lining 25-yard shot in the 89th minute to put an exclamation point on the evening.

"We came out a little slow against a team that we thought we could beat so it kind of caught us off guard," said Zanon, a graduate of Waukesha West High School who showcased her offensive skills and versatility while recording the first multi-goal game of her college career. "As the night went on, we were able to connect on our passes, continued to shoot the ball and finally found the back of the net. Being a good team, we were able to adjust to the situation, work through it and still get the job done.
"Looking back, it was one of my better collegiate games so it felt awesome to be able to play at home on Friday night under the bright lights in front of the big crowd and contribute to the victory."
The Pioneers outshot Wisconsin Lutheran 21-4 in the contest, including a dominant 9-2 shot-on-goal advantage.
Senior goalkeeper Christina O' Block (Libertyville, Ill.) registered two saves in playing the entire 90 minutes to preserve a shutout.

"Tonight, we had moments where we saw a lot of good things happen but then gradually would lose our intensity and composure," said Carroll eighth-year head coach Susie Foster, whose team attempted 11 corner kicks. "It's something that can happen early in the season and is the type of game that creates a good opportunity to work out some of the kinks. That said, from a coaching standpoint it's exciting to be able to tinker with different things to see what works while attempting to get the job done on the field. It might have been frustrating at times because it wasn't necessarily our best performance and we had our share of chances. But in the end we did find the back of the net a few times and came away with another important victory that we can learn from. That's the bottom line."
