Carroll fights to scoreless tie with Carthage

O' Block shines at goalkeeper in physical battle with in-state CCIW rival

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Christina O' Block was the stabilizer.
O' Block, a 5-foot-6 senior goalkeeper from Libertyville, Ill., registered a season-high nine saves as the Carroll University women's soccer team played to a scoreless tie with in-state rival Carthage College after double overtime (including 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute extra periods)  in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin opener at Schneider Stadium on Saturday evening.
It was the second, hard-fought draw of the season for Carroll, which remained unbeaten at home this season and is 5-2-2 overall.
Carthage, which outshot the Pioneers by a 20-13 margin including a 9-6 shot-on-goal advantage, is currently 3-3-2 overall.
It was an aggressive standout performance by O' Block, who showcased her mental focus and athleticism by making three pressure-packed saves within the final 10 minutes of the marathon to help preserve a shutout.
"Every CCIW game is a battle so I'm very proud of how we were able to stick it out until the end," said O' Block, a second-team all-conference selection in the talent-laden CCIW last season who posted her fifth shutout of the year in playing the entire 110 minutes. "Even though it wasn't the result we wanted, we fought until the very last second and showed that we have the ability to compete in this conference.
"It's definitely a good start but we still have a ways to go moving forward. We're all committed and all in to the program so I'm excited to see where it takes us. We've competed in our share of overtime games so it was great to see that same fight until time finally ran out. It all starts with every single player contributing from beginning to end. Being a young team, we're all starting to come together and this type of effort will only help in our progression. We have a lot of upcoming CCIW games so now we just have to bring our best effort to the field and see what happens."
Junior forward Brookelyn Campbell (Oconomowoc, Wis.) generated three shot-on-goal opportunities for Carroll. Sophomore forward Erika Hess (Green Bay, Wis.), freshman midfielder Simone Lippmann (Lindenhurst, Ill.) and freshman defender Amanda Rose (Geneva, Ill.) each added an attempt.
Junior midfielder Courtney Lee and sophomore forward Morgan Verbeten each had three shots on goal for the Lady Red.
"Across the CCIW you see such quality in all of the teams so every game is elevated to a new level," said Carroll eighth-year head coach Susie Foster, who formerly served as head coach at Carthage from 2004-2010. "Obviously, you could feel it in terms of the back-and-forth flow to the game tonight. This matchup has always been a battle and we've played to a tie with them the last three years (also referring to a scoreless draw in 2018 and a 1-1 stalemate in 2017). It's never short on dramatics and both sides had some great opportunities to score. Tina was fantastic in goal and made tremendous saves over the course of the game.
"During the first half, we were kind of stepping backward, retreating and not executing. But then came back aggressively in the second half, began creating chances and playing more our style of game. Looking back, we need to be a little more composed on the ball. We played with great intensity and fight but now just need to maintain possession a little bit longer and then use our athleticism to make the most of the situation. We take a lot of pride in defending our home turf and remaining unbeaten on this field so I'm super proud of how the ladies responded to the challenge and competed at a high level for 110 minutes. It's a game of chances and always amazing that you can play 90 or 110 minutes and it can come down to one play that can happen in a split second. Being the first CCIW game for so many of our younger players, I was happy and proud to see how they rose to the occasion, understood what it takes to compete at this level and the gravity of each game. Hopefully, we can continue to build on this effort, make the necessary adjustments and take another step forward as we prepare for our next game versus Augustana."
