Carroll begins tourney with a bang

Pioneers sweep Martin Luther in opening round of UW-Oshkosh Pizza Hut Classic

OSHKOSH, Wis. - Senior outside hitter Kylie Mueller (Fox Lake, Ill.) contributed a team-high eight kills as the Carroll University women's volleyball team swept Martin Luther College 25-15, 25-10, 25-20 in the opening round of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Pizza Hut Classic at Kolf Sports Center on Friday evening.
It was the third consecutive head-to-head dual-meet victory of the early season for Carroll, which improved to 3-2 overall.
Senior outside hitter Cassidy Mrotek (Manitowoc, Wis.) followed with seven kills, six digs and two service aces for the Pioneers, who advanced to the College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin Tournament last season. Senior outside hitter Sydney Wilkins (Portage, Ind.) and freshman middle blocker MacKenzie Olson (Rock Falls, Ill.) each finished with five kills, junior middle blocker Rachel Noonan (Crystal Lake, Ill.) had five solo blocks and senior setter Jennilyn Joy Cave (Bolingbrook, Ill.) added 18 assists.
Carroll, which registered a momentum-building .529 hitting percentage in the opening set, had 31 kills, nine blocks, seven aces and committed only four errors in the contest.
Kati Aguilar had eight kills for Martin Luther, which dropped to 0-6 overall.
