Carroll comes up short in loss to in-state rival Carthage

Pioneers' late-game struggles continue in frustrating CCIW road loss

KENOSHA, Wis. - Sophomore guard/forward Blake Williams contributed a team-high 13 points, four assists, three rebounds and a steal but the Carroll University men's basketball team lost to in-state rival Carthage College 67-63 in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game at Tarble Arena on Wednesday night.
It was the seventh consecutive conference loss for Carroll, which dropped to 2-8 in the league standings and 9-10 overall.
The team's last four losses have each come by a four-point margin.
The Pioneers led 58-57 with 4:56 remaining but Carthage answered with what became a decisive 10-5 run, including six unanswered points over a critical two-minute stretch - ignited on a jump shot by 6-foot-11 junior center Sean Johnson with 2:34 left.
The Red Men made 4 of 4 free throws in the final 15 seconds to preserve a come-from-behind home-court victory.
Carroll, which is seeking its second straight trip to the prestigious six-team CCIW Tournament, currently is tied for seventh place with six games remaining on the regular-season schedule - including four home games at Van Male Field House during that stretch.

Senior forward Kale Maupin finished with 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal for Carroll, which made 10 3-point baskets, 5 of 7 free throws and shot 44.4 percent from field-goal range. Senior guard Nick Penny and junior guard Tarren Hall each followed with 10 points.
Senior forward Charlie Soule had eight points, seven rebounds, one assist and a steal for the Pioneers, who generated 18 assists. Senior guard David Anilus chipped in five points, junior guard Ryan Clarey had three points, five rebounds and five assists with freshman forward Carter Sturgeon adding two points.
Carroll, which led 25-24 at the intermission, following a tough, physical first half, delivered a tenacious effort inside by scoring 24 points in the paint and maintaining a 32-27 rebound advantage to offset the tall, imposing Carthage lineup (which included Johnson and 6-foot-11 senior center Brad Perry).
Junior guard Justin Gruber, sophomore forward Dylan Ingebrigtsen, freshman guard Jimmy Gillespie, freshman guard Rocco Ronzio and freshman guard Seb Lees also contributed for the Pioneers, who used a deep rotation in the contest.
Senior forward Kienan Baltimore finished with a game-high 22 points with three 3-pointers, 7 of 11 free throws, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals to lead Carthage, which improved to 4-6 in conference and 12-7 overall. Senior guard Jordan Kedrowski followed with 11 points, freshman guard/forward Fillip Bulatovic collected nine points, Perry had eight points and Johnson added six points for the Red Men, who made eight 3-pointers, 13 of 23 free throws, scored 26 points in the paint and shot 51.1 percent from the field.
Carthage shot 67 percent (6 of 9) from 3-point range in the second half.
