Carroll falls to in-state rival Carthage in fierce CCIW battle

Maupin finishes with double-double, including career-high 19 points, to lead Pioneers in home-court loss

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Carroll University men's basketball team lost to fierce in-state rival Carthage College 73-65 in a hard-fought, physical College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game at Van Male Field House on Wednesday night.
It was the second consecutive frustrating, home-court loss for Carroll, which dropped to 2-3 in the highly contested conference standings and 9-5 overall.
The Pioneers, who trailed 32-29 at the intermission following a confidence-building opening 20 minutes, were outscored 41-36 over the course of the second half.
With the use of a tenacious press, Carroll trimmed the deficit to 65-63 with 2:01 remaining but yielded what proved to be a decisive 8-2 run the rest of the way.
Senior forward Kale Maupin registered a double-double by finishing with a career-high 19 points, 11 rebounds, 4 of 4 free throws, two blocked shots, one 3-point basket, one steal and an assist in playing 37 1/2 minutes to lead the Pioneers, who made 10 3-pointers, 15 of 18 free throws and shot 33.3 percent (20-of-60) from field-goal range.
It was an impressive individual performance for Maupin, who aggressively maneuvered inside the paint to help offset Carthage's imposing 2-3 zone including the big-man tandem of 6-foot-11, 280-pound senior center Brad Perry and 6-foot-11, 220-pound junior center Sean Johnson.
"We had opportunities and didn't take advantage," said the 6-4, 210-pound Maupin, of the challenging battle. "Each time we would get our offense rolling, we would commit turnovers to kill the run. Conversely, at the defensive end, once we are on a run we can't leave them score because it takes away our momentum. That can't happen if we want to win. It's something that needs to be cleaned up moving forward in both practice and come game time.
"At this point, we're 2-3 in conference and need to start playing with a chip on our shoulder to get back in the hunt for the tournament. The top six seeds advance so we need to compete with an edge and go after every team with all our might the rest of the way."

Senior guard Nick Penny contributed 16 points with four 3-pointers, four assists, two rebounds, one steal and a blocked shot for Carroll, which outrebounded the Red Men 37-25 and showcased its unselfishness by generating 17 assists. Junior point guard Ryan Clarey chipped in 12 points with three 3-pointers, five rebounds, a team-best five assists, three steals and a blocked shot.
Junior guard Tarren Hall added 10 points with two 3-pointers, 4 of 4 free throws, seven rebounds, one assist and a blocked shot.
"Both teams were hungry, on their heels and in need of a win following difficult losses but that's life in the CCIW," said Carroll seventh-year head coach Paul Combs, whose team is seeking a second straight trip to the prestigious CCIW Tournament. "Their gameplan was very good and consistently forced us into some  perimeter looks. On the other end, we had a hard time guarding their two big men who played extremely well (noting that the tandem combined for 27 points and 16 rebounds in the contest) and really controlled the game at times.
"Give them credit, they made plays, especially down the stretch, when we cut the lead down to two points and consistently finished on key possessions. We had our chances but just couldn't capitalize on the opportunities. They have a veteran coach, good veteran players and were simply better than us tonight. We just have to be ready to bounce back against preseason conference favorite North Central on Saturday."

Perry finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds to register a double-double for Carthage, which entered the showdown hovering just out of the Top 25 but improved to 2-2 in conference and 10-3 overall. Senior guard Jordon Kedrowski had 18 points with four 3-pointers, senior point guard Crishwan Cook had 15 points and Johnson added nine points for the Red Men, who made six 3-pointers, 17 of 20 free throws and shot 48.1 percent (25-of-52) from the field.
Carthage head coach Bosko Djurickovic collected his 300th career conference victory, becoming only the second coach to reach the career milestone in the history of the CCIW.
