Pios drop season-opening doubleheader in Tennessee

Carroll falls to Sewanee 11-3 in second game of nonconference twinbill

SEWANEE, Tenn. - Sophomore third baseman Benton Holly went 2-for-3, including a run-scoring single in the top of the second inning, but the Carroll University baseball team lost to Sewanee 11-3 in the finale of a season-opening nonconference doubleheader at Montgomery Field on Saturday afternoon.
It was the second game of a three-game Tennessee weekend road trip for Carroll, which dropped to 0-2 overall.
Junior first baseman Mitchell Massino followed with two hits to help power a seven-hit attack for the Pioneers, who answered with all three of their runs in the top of the second inning to tie the game (capped by Holly and sophomore designated hitter Justin Baker each scoring as the result of an error).
Baker, junior shortstop Brad Vosters and junior second baseman Danny Glampe each added a hit for the Pioneers, who stranded eight runners on base.
Sophomore left-hander Alan Spurley took the loss, yielding six earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and three walks in 2 1/3 innings.
Sewanee, which finished with eight hits, scored four times in both the bottom of the third and fifth to break the game wide open.
