Pios lose heartbreaker in finale of Tennessee road trip

Carroll falls to Sewanee 4-3 to finish challenging three-game nonconference series

SEWANEE, Tenn. - Senior right fielder Dylan Callahan went 2-for-4 with a double and scored a run as the Carroll University baseball team lost to Sewanee 4-3 in a tension-filled nonconference game at Montgomery Field on Sunday morning.
It was the series finale of a season-opening three-game Tennessee weekend road trip for Carroll, which dropped to 0-3 overall.
Tied 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning with runners on second and third and two outs, Sewanee senior right fielder Jared Demkowicz scored the winning run as the result of a wild pitch.
It was a frustrating, sudden turn of events for the Pioneers, who scored two runs to take what appeared to be a commanding 3-1 lead in the top of the ninth.
Carroll, which finished with six hits and stranded five runners on base, collected the first run of the contest in the top of the fourth as Callahan scored on an error.
Sewanee, which was coming off its first 20-victory season in school history and first winning campaign since 1985, tied the game on an RBI sacrifice flyout in the bottom of the fourth.
The Pioneers reclaimed a lead on clutch one-out run-scoring singles by senior catcher TJ Pfaffle and sophomore third baseman Justin Baker in the ninth - ultimately setting the stage for the wild finish.
Freshman right-hander Bryce Spaulding made his first career start for Carroll, allowing one earned run on two hits with five strikeouts and three walks through four complete innings. Freshman right-hander Carter Ruegsegger contributed three scoreless innings and freshman left-hander Scotty Starovich followed with an unblemished eighth.
Sophomore right-hander Jake Nitch, who came on to pitch the ninth and took the loss, yielded two runs on two hits with two walks in 2/3 innings before being relieved by junior southpaw Curtis Sheahan.
Senior designated hitter Chris McNulty went 2-for-5 and drove in a run for Sewanee, which improved to 4-0-1 overall.
The Tigers finished with seven hits and left eight runners on base.
