Pioneers earn first victory of the season

Pfaffle delivers two-run triple in the sixth as Carroll defeats UW-Superior in opening game of doubleheader

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Senior catcher TJ Pfaffle went 2-for-3 and drove in what became the winning runs on a clutch, two-out two-run triple down the right-field line in the top of the sixth inning as the Carroll University baseball team defeated the University of Wisconsin-Superior 5-2 in the opening game of a nonconference doubleheader at U.S. Bank Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
It was the first victory of the young season for Carroll, which snapped a three-game road losing streak to improve to 1-3 overall.
It was the season opener for UW-Superior, which scored two runs in the bottom of the first as the result of an error and an RBI sacrifice flyout.
Carroll trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the second on a run-scoring sacrifice fly to left field by junior first baseman Mitchell Massino and tied the game on a two-out single to left field by senior right fielder Dylan Callahan in the fifth.
Carroll collected two runs on two hits in the game-breaking sixth.
Sophomore center fielder Josh Kolb reached on a one-out single, advanced to second on a walk to Massino and took third on a sacrifice fly to center field by sophomore left fielder Justin Baker - setting the stage for Pfaffle's game-winning hit.
The Pioneers' final run came as junior shortstop Brad Vosters successfully stole home on a perfectly executed doublesteal in the seventh.
Kolb went 3-for-4 with a stolen base to help power a nine-hit attack for Carroll, which finished with four stolen bases.
Senior right-hander Seth Smith was the winning pitcher, allowing one earned run on five hits with six strikeouts and one walk in going the distance - retiring the side in the bottom of the seventh and fittingly capping the strong, statement-making seven-inning outing with a game-ending strikeout.
Smith, who threw 99 total pitches and earned his first complete-game victory of the season to improve to 1-1 overall, faced 26 hitters in the contest while forcing 10 flyouts and four groundouts in the process.
