Pioneers showcase firepower in home opener

Jelacic, Johnson each score seven goals to lead Carroll to nonconference victory over Beloit

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Explosive.
That was a fitting way to describe the tenacious, high-octane effort of the Carroll University women's lacrosse team as it defeated Beloit College 21-7 in a cold, windy nonconference showdown at Schneider Stadium on Wednesday night.
It was the home opener for Carroll, which claimed its first victory of the early season to improve to 1-1 overall.
The dominant 60-minute performance took on added significance as it was the most goals scored in a single game by a Pioneers' team dating back to April 6, 2019 (a 23-0 road victory over Elmhurst).
Carroll outscored the Buccaneers 11-3 in what proved to be a decisive first half, including eight unanswered goals over the course of the opening 16 minutes.
Junior attacker Clara Jelacic and junior midfielder Michaela Johnson each scored a game-high seven goals to lead the Pioneers, who outshot the Buccaneers 34-14 - including a 28-12 shot-on-goal margin.
Jelacic has combined to score a statement-making 14 goals in the first two games of the season with Johnson following with nine goals and two assists.
"Having faced a challenging team in the opener (referring to a season-opening 16-14 road loss to Albion College), it served as a good measuring stick as to where we were at and what we needed to improve on," said Jelacic, a first-team all-conference selection last year who generated 10 shots on goal, fielded 17 ground balls, caused five turnovers, won 14 draw controls and converted on a free-position shot in the frigid home-field rout. "Tonight, our main focus was on execution. Even though we started off strong in the first half, we had moments where we would lose intensity with it leading to some messy possessions and turnovers. At halftime, we dedicated ourselves to having some fun out there and it really seemed to have a positive impact on our team dynamic and helped us play at a more consistent level. That allowed us to finish on a few opportunities in the opening minutes and build some momentum the rest of the way."

Coming off a difficult loss in the first game of the season, Johnson was quick to point out that the experience served as great motivation heading into the home opener.
"We gave a great effort in the season opener so even though it was disheartening when it didn't work out in our favor, we didn't get discouraged, worked through the experience and came back ready to go," said Johnson, a second-team all-conference selection last season who completed the dominant 1-2 offensive scoring punch by equaling her career-high single-game goal total and finishing with seven shots on goal, six ground balls, four draw controls, two caused turnovers and a successful free-position shot. "In the end, it was all about improving on each possession, having fun with it and making the most of the situation. Each time we would score a goal, it would take the excitement to a new level and everyone continued to feed off of it. Hopefully, we can continue to build off of the momentum and carry it over into our next two games this weekend."

Junior attacker/midfielder Alyssa Scharff contributed a hat trick, freshman attacker Jenna May had two goals with senior defender Amanda Ferr and sophomore midfielder Rachel Fordham each adding one goal for Carroll.
Fordham finished with a team-high four assists, Scharff contributed three assists with Johnson and freshman attacker Katrina Hardin each collecting one.
Freshmen goalkeepers Rebecca McDaniel and Alicia Van Dale combined for five saves in the battle.
"It was a lot of fun being back at home and playing out on the turf of Schneider Stadium again," said Carroll head coach Michael Hodge, who guided his team to a combined 23-10 overall record and back-to-back appearances in the prestigious CCIW Tournament the last two years. "We came out with a lot of energy and really continued to come into our own in terms of the offense as the game progressed. Clara (Jelacic) did an amazing job off the draw, controlled possession and we were able to finish on a few goals early on to set the tone. As that happened, we were able to slow things down, work through some of the jitters and back it with a strong defensive effort to help manintain the momentum. It was just a complete team effort from beginning to end."

Senior midfielder Nicole Dolcimascolo finished with four goals and two assists for Beloit, which dropped to 1-1 overall. Junior midfielder Kieran Rodning had two goals and senior midfielder Fiona Milchman added one goal and two assists for the Buccaneers.
