Carroll dominates in home-field victory

Eight players reach the scoring column as Pioneers defeat UW-La Crosse 18-1

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Carroll University women's lacrosse team defeated the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse 18-1 in a sunny, cold nonconference game at Schneider Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
It was the second consecutive home-field victory of the early season for Carroll, which improved to 2-1 overall.
The Pioneers outscored UW-La Crosse 7-0 in what proved to be the decisive first half, including three goals in the opening 10 minutes.
Carroll displayed its depth, balance and athleticism throughout the day with eight different players reaching the scoring column.
Clara Jelacic finished with a team-high four goals and two assists to lead Carroll, which outshot the Eagles 40-9 - maintaining a 29-5 shot-on-goal advantage.
Junior midfielder Courtenay Karls followed with a hat trick in making a successful trip back to the lineup from injury for the Pioneers, who have combined to outscore their last two opponents 39-8, including a dominant 18-3 margin in the first half.
"We were a little rough and rusty at times during the opening 30 minutes but came out strong to start the second half, managed to execute the way Coach (Michael) Hodge wanted and did a nice job of pushing the ball downfield like we've been focusing on in practice," said Karls, who finished with five shots on goal, seven ground balls, five draw controls, two caused turnovers, one perfectly executed free-position shot and an assist. "Looking back, we played well and ultimately came away with the final result that we wanted.
"Being only the third game of the season, it was fantastic to see so many of the freshmen come in and contribute to the the victory. Today, that depth played a big role in our success. The amount of assists was crazy and really showed the unselfishness of this team."

Junior midfielder Michaela Johnson, junior attacker/midfielder Alyssa Scharff,  sophomore midfielder Rachel Fordham, freshman attacker Katrina Hardin and freshman attacker Jenna May each contributed two goals with senior attacker Natasha Niles adding one - her first collegiate goal - for Carroll.
Fordham collected a team-best five assists with Johnson and Hardin each adding three.
The Pioneers fielded 35 ground balls, forced 31 turnovers, won 16 draw controls, generated 14 assists and attempted six free-position shots in the rout.
The tenacious Carroll defense forced two 90-second shot-clock violations in the contest.

Freshman goalkeeper Alicia Van Dale was a stabilizing force throughout the day in making her first collegiate start for the Pioneers, registering four saves in playing the entire 60 minutes.
"I really wanted to come away with a shutout but it slipped away in the final seconds," said Van Dale, of making her memorable first collegiate start. "From beginning to end, the defense was on top of it, fielded nearly every ground ball and did a great job of keeping them out of the zone.
"Coming into the game, I was feeling a fair bit amount of pressure but after getting out on the field it was all about doing my best to help the team. Without any film on UW-La Crosse, we just attempted to figure them out as the day went on and make adjustments on the fly. We played with a lot of intensity, there were no lagging stretches and everyone worked as one, cohesive group to get the job done. It was just really cool to get the victory and ring the bell.
"We're just going to do our best to defend our home turf and try to keep it going."

Freshman midfielder Anna Davis scored the lone goal for UW-La Crosse, the first in program history, with 11 seconds remaining in the contest.
Junior goalkeeper Ellen Coggio made 11 saves for the Eagles.
