St. Louis, Mo. – The Carroll University softball team won their second contest of the day over Fontbonne, 5-2. Freshman
Breanna Roberts won her first collegiate game after throwing five innings and only allowing two runs.
Kaylee Learman came up big in game two with a home run and a double to give her three RBIs.
The Pioneers (2-0, 0-0 CCIW) couldn't get their bats going for the first three innings, until they rattled off five unanswered over the next two innings.
Madison Wagner added in another triple in her second game of the day, and recorded two RBIs. The Pios tied the Griffins in hits with seven but gained bases on balls three more times than their opponent.
Sierra Grubor and
Lyndsey Rost collected stolen bases, and freshman
Abby Wimmer threw out two Griffins attempting to steal.
After giving up a two-out double in the first, Roberts surrendered the first Fontbonne run of the day. Roberts held Fontbonne until in the bottom of the fifth inning, but a two-out RBI double scored another.
The women had trouble getting balls to fall into gaps in the early parts of the game.
Lauren Harshbarger walked to start the fourth inning, and Wagner's triple brought Harshbarger around the bases. Learman came out with an extra base hit of her own to score Wagner. The next inning out,
Sierra Grubor walked and then took off for second base. Wagner smacked a pitch up the middle to score Grubor, and Learman's home run brought the Pioneer lead up to five. The women still had a chance to threaten, but a new Fontbonne pitcher forced Wimmer to ground out, ending the inning.
Grace Bradley stepped into the circle for her first career game, and finished off the Griffins six up, six down to secure the second win of the afternoon.
The softball team will continue their St. Louis stretch tomorrow against Wash U, with the games being moved due to field conditions.
