St. Louis, Mo. – The Carroll University Softball team opened up their 2020 season with a dominant 8-0 win over Fontbonne. Freshman
Claudia Spencer finished 3-3 with two triples, three RBIs, and a run. Senior pitcher
Amanda Osterhus tossed a no-hitter over five shutout innings, and struck out 10 of 17 batters faced.
The Pioneers (1-0, 0-0 CCIW) scored eight runs on nine hits and fielded two errors.
Madison Wagner finished with two hits, and four others finished with one. Three women stole bases and only four runners were left on base all game. They walked five times and only struck out three times.
Lauren Harshbarger scored the first run of the season thanks to Spencer's two-out RBI single in the first inning.
After a scoreless second inning, the flood gates opened, and the women compiled six unanswered runs.
Kaylee Learman singled and advanced on an errant play, causing Harshbarger to score her second time of the game. Spencer came up and drove in two with her first triple, followed by
Allyssa Demma's RBI single, and
Mathena Higgins' RBI triple.
Megan Funk flew out to right field to be credited a sacrifice fly to bring the women up seven.
After Wagner tripled in the fourth,
Lyndsey Rost came on to pinch run. She scored on an error by the Griffin's catcher, bringing the score to 8-0.
After Osterhus walked a batter in the second inning, she went on to finish three up, three down the rest of the game, collecting two strikeouts an inning.
