Clermont, Fla. – The Carroll University Softball team's offense continues to outlast their opponents, beating both Penn State Du Bois and Cornell today by scores of 17-0 and 8-0, respectively. The Pioneers advance to 11-1 on the season after today.
GAME 1
17 Pioneers appeared in the competition against Penn State Du Bois.
Claudia Spencer hit her first career homerun, and
Kaylee Learman added one of her own deep to centerfield.
Mathena Higgins collected two of the Pioneer's 12 hits, including two RBIs. Three other Pioneers added in RBIs.
Breanna Roberts picked up another win, pitching three innings allowing only one hit and striking out four.
After a scoreless bottom of the first, two consecutive eight run innings put away the game of the Carroll squad. After Spencer's homerun got the scoring started.
Sierra Grubor added an RBI triple to score
Mathena Higgins. Numerous fielding errors by the Lions kept the Pioneers on the base paths.
In the third inning, Higgins added her two-RBI single up the middle to bring in Spencer and
Madison Wagner to bring the score to 8-0.
Shay Dunn collected her first career hit and RBI to bring the score to double digits.
Rachel Piontek came in for the final two innings, and allowed only two hits and striking out one.
GAME 2
The Pioneers scored in all but two innings. Wagner recorded three RBIs, a hit, a walk, and a run in the second game.
Amanda Osterhus gained win number seven on the season and extended her scoreless inning streak to 35.2 innings pitched.
Wagner scored
Lauren Harshbarger right away in the first inning of the game after she reached on a throwing error.
Maria Mundt advanced her over to third base with a SAC bunt bringing Wagner to the plate.
In the third, Harshbarger found her way to third again with Wagner scoring her on a soft hit infield grounder. Harshbarger was safe at the plate. Higgins singled down the line scoring Wagner.
Wagner scored Harshbarger once more on another Wagner single to bring the Pios up 5-0.
Kaylee Learman picked up her second RBI of the game with a center field single to score
Maria Mundt.
Harshbarger smacked a double to score Grubor and
Lyndsey Rost, and locked in the score 8-0.
Grace Bradley came in for the final frame of the game and pitched to five batters before getting the final out of the day.
The Pios have four more games down in Clermont, with two more tomorrow and two more on Friday before heading back home.
