Pios capture emotional first victory of the season

Olsen celebrates first win as new Carroll head coach; Team wins for first time since March 3, 2018

BELOIT, Wis. - The Carroll University men's lacrosse team defeated Beloit College 11-8 in an emotional, statement-making nonconference game Saturday evening.
It was the first victory for first-year Carroll head coach Zack Olsen, whose team improved to 1-3 overall with the confidence-building road performance.
The effort took on added significance as it was a season-high single-game goal total, the third highest single-game goal total in program history and snapped a 29-game losing streak dating back to March 10, 2018.
The Pioneers trailed 8-7 after three quarters but showcased their resilience, determination and growth by scoring four unanswered goals over the course of the final 15 minutes - highlighted by what became the winning goal on an unassisted shot by senior midfielder Michael Peters to extend the lead to 9-8 with 11:43 remaining.
Peters and senior midfielder/attackman Jeff Schultz each finished with a hat trick to lead Carroll, which outshot the Buccaneers by a 37-35 - including a critical, momentum-shifting 13-3 margin in the fourth quarter.
Junior attackman Airik Ranjo contributed two goals with junior attackman Cordell McNamara, sophomore midfielder Danny McGee and sophomore midfielder Zach Mehrtens each collecting one for the Pioneers.
McNamara had a team-leading two assists with Mehrtens, Ranjo and senior midfielder Christopher Bechtel each adding one.
Bechtel won seven face offs, Schultz had a team-high six shots-on-goal and senior defenseman Peter Amicarelli fielded a team-best seven ground balls.
Senior goalkeeper Abe Escarda and sophomore goalkeeper Thomas Atella combined for 11 saves to help preserve a victory.
