Pios Blow out Roger Williams

13 hits for the Pioneers over five innings ended the game after five innings

Clermont, Fla. – The Carroll University Pioneers ended day one 2-0 after a decisive win over Roger Williams University, by a score of 11-0 through a shortened five innings. Breanna Roberts earned another win after four innings of work, giving up only one hit and a walk. Freshman Kate Christian started her first career game and racked up three hits and two RBIs.

The Pios collected 13 hits to score their 11 runs, with only one error in the field.  Sierra Grubor and Abby Wimmer sacrificed their at bats to advance runners, while Lauren Harshbarger stole two bases. Roberts stranded five runners on the base paths, but the Pios left six on in crucial points. Maria Mundt and Harshbarger scored two runs out of the team's 11.

The Pios got started right away in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs and almost batting around. Harshbarger ripped a double down the left field line, followed by an error to let Sierra Grubor advance. Madison Wagner's RBI scored Harshbarger. Kaylee Learman came up and smacked a single to score Grubor. Later in the inning, Christian singled and advanced to a throw at the plate that scored Claudia Spencer.

Mundt started the second inning with a single, and advanced on a passed ball. Harshbarger batted in Mundt on a center field single. Harshbarger triggered a throw to third by the catcher, who threw the ball out of play to force a ground rule for Harshbarger to score.

The bottom of the fourth opened up, with Amber Jacobson walking to start the inning. Two more singles to load the bases forced a pitching change by the Hawks. A Mathena Higgins walk scored Jacobson, and Christian hit her third single of the game to score Emily Goodger. Pioneers subs including Rachel Piontek, and Sophia Albano pinched hit as the scores reached 11-0.

Grace Bradley came on in the fifth inning to secure the win, retiring the first and only three batters she faced.

The women get back on the field tomorrow morning to take on UMass Dartmouth at 1:30 PM ET, and Wentworth Institute of Technology at 4PM ET.
