Learman’s Grand Slam Lifts Pioneers to Fourth Straight Win

Pioneers responded after starting down one run early.

Clermont, Fla. --  The Carroll University Pioneers showed resilience against a tough Wentworth team, winning 7-1 in their fourth game of THE Spring Games trip down in Florida. Kaylee Learman smoked a grand slam to left field after starting down 0-1. Freshman Grace Bradley picked up her first career win, pitching five innings of one-run ball, striking out four.

The Pioneers (7-1, 0-0 CCIW) collect their fourth straight win and have their best start to a season since 2002. The team collected 12 hits over their seven innings, including two hits from Learman, Madison Wagner, Megan Funk and Maria Mundt. Emily Goodger smacked a double, and Sierra Grubor (2) and Mundt stole bases.

After letting the first two batters on base, Bradley surrendered a run early. She held them scoreless the next three innings allowing only two hits.

After struggling to create momentum in the first two innings. Mundt led off the third inning with a single to right center to spark the offense. Grubor singled and Wagner walked to load the bases. Learman stepped up to the plate and homered off a 1-0 count to claim her first career grand slam. Claudia Spencer and Kate Christian grounded out to end the inning.

Funk led off with a single an inning later, and Mundt laid down a beauty SAC bunt to advance the runners. Lauren Harshbarger gained an RBI single scoring funk, then Grubor reached on a fielder's choice bunt that took Abby Wimmer out at home plate. Wagner gained another hit of the day with a single through the left side to score Harshbarger. By the time it was all said and done the Pioneers were up 7-1.

Rachel Piontek came on in the sixth inning to finish out the game. Piontek found herself in a jam early, with runners at the corners with no outs. She was able to get two batters to fly out and Mundt picked up a ground ball and tagged out a runner to get out of the inning. Piontek finished three up and three down in the seventh only throwing five pitches.

The Pioneer softball team looks forward to tomorrow's third day of games in Florida. They will face Emanuel in the first game of the day at 4:00PM.
