Pioneers rally late to earn first victory of Florida trip

Callahan hits two-run homer in eighth as Carroll defeats SUNY Canton 8-6; Starovich earns first collegiate win

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Dylan Callahan, a senior right fielder from Sheboygan, Wis., hit a one-out two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Carroll University baseball team to an 8-6 victory over SUNY Canton on its second day of the 30th annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Player Development Complex on Monday.
It was the second nonconference matchup of a six-game, seven-day spring break trip to Florida for Carroll, which improved to 2-5 overall with the come-from-behind effort.
On the game-winning sequence, junior shortstop Brad Vosters walked to begin the inning and advanced to second on a stolen base to set the stage for Callahan's late-inning heroics.
SUNY Canton scored two runs in both the top of the first and second innings to claim an early 4-0 lead in the contest.
Carroll trimmed the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth on a one-out RBI sacrifice flyout to center field by sophomore catcher Trevor Benz and a two-out run-scoring single to right field by senior second baseman Ethan Fleigle.
SUNY Canton scored a single run in the sixth to extend the lead to 5-2 but the Pioneers answered in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI sacrifice flyout by junior designated hitter Danny Glampe.
SUNY Canton scored its final run in the seventh to increase the margin to 6-3.
Carroll managed to rally for three runs in the seventh to tie the game as junior first baseman Mitchell Massino delivered a run-scoring double down the left-field line, sophomore left fielder Justin Baker followed with an RBI sacrifice flyout and Massino later scored from third as the result of a balk.
Fleigle and Massino each had two hits to help power an eight-hit offensive attack for Carroll, which stranded nine runners on base.
Sophomore left-hander Alan Spurley started the game, allowing three earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks through four complete innings.
Senior right-hander Brenden Charette came in relief in the fifth, yielding one run on two hits, for the Pioneers. Junior left-hander Curtis Sheahan followed with an efficient sixth and seventh, allowing one run on two hits.
Freshman left-hander Scotty Starovich, who entered the game to begin the eighth, pitched two scoreless innings en route to his first collegiate victory.
Starovich faced six batters, finishing with two strikeouts while forcing two flyouts and two groundouts.
